Study Notes
Motor Movement
Motor movements refer to involuntary actions controlled by the central nervous system. These behaviors can help protect the body from harm, facilitate social interactions, and support essential life functions. This section will explore various motor skills development during infancy, including the grasping reflex, Moro reflex, Babinski reflex, sucking reflex, and rooting reflex.
Grasping Reflex
The grasp reflex is one of the first motor responses noted after birth. During this stage, if you touch the palm side of an infant's hand with your finger, they may instinctively close their fingers around it. This response helps develop fine motor coordination needed for future tasks like holding objects and manipulating them.
Moro Reflex
Also known as the startle reflex, this reaction occurs when something unexpected happens near the baby's head. If an object is dropped above her, she will extend both arms outward briskly and spread her hands apart before bringing them together again. She may even cry or scream. It serves to alert caretakers when there might be danger nearby so that they can intervene quickly.
Babinski Reflex
This test assesses whether someone has control over the muscles involved in moving their big toe upwards towards their shin rather than downwards away from their body; pointing toes is considered normal while keeping them straight indicates potential neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy.
Sucking Reflex
Newborn babies have a natural urge to suck things - usually because breastfeeding or bottle feeding requires doing just that! They also exhibit spontaneous mouth activity whereby they open wide when presented with anything soft enough to fit into their mouth. However, between two months and four months old, many typically developing children will lose most of these nonnutritive oral behaviours – unless stimulated repeatedly throughout waking hours by parents who enjoy holding onto little ones' tiny cheeks!
Rooting Reflex
When touched gently along either jawline ("root"), newborns often turn their heads toward the source—a behavior referred to as the 'rooting' reflex. This innate ability allows nursing mothers and fathers alike find an ideal position for latching on without causing discomfort by bumping noses too frequently.
In summary, motor developments during early childhood are crucial for the survival of human beings and shape our development in later years. Understanding these reflexes gives us insight into how we can better understand our own bodies and those around us.
