- "Railway" means Indian Railways
- "Railway Administration" means the General Manager or any other officer authorized to exercise the powers of the General Manager
- "Railway Servant" means any person employed by the Railway Administration

- These rules apply to all Railway Servants
- These rules apply to all Railway Servants on deputation to other organizations

Rule 55: Interpretation
- Words and expressions used in these rules shall have the same meaning as in the Indian Railways Act, 1989
- In these rules, unless the context otherwise requires, words importing the masculine gender shall include females
