    Study Notes

Indian history is vast and varied, encompassing ancient civilizations like the Harappans, Mauryan Empire, Ashoka's rule, Gupta Dynasty, Kushanas, Chandragupta Vikramaditya, Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas of Kalyani, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara, Mughals, British Raj, and more. Here's a brief overview of some key aspects of India's past according to Class 10 Social Sciences Textbooks:

    Ancient Period

The Indus Valley Civilization was one of the earliest known advanced civilizations in world history. It covered what is today Pakistan and northwestern India between c. 3300 and 1700 BCE. The civilization was extremely urbanized with well-planned cities, standard weights and measures, excellent drainage systems, water supply networks, and the earliest form of sanitation found anywhere in the world.

Around 1500 BCE, several small kingdoms emerged from this culture, which were later united under Emperor Ashoka during his reign around 273–232 BC. This period saw the rise of Buddhism and Jainism, two major religions originating in India.

    Medieval Period

During the Gupta dynasty (c. 280-600 CE), Hindu philosophy flourished, leading to the development of six classical schools of Hindu thought including Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Samkhya, Yoga, Mimamsa, and Vedanta. Also, Aryabhata made significant contributions to mathematics.

The Kushana empire (first century) introduced new gods and goddesses to the subcontinent and established trade links across Asia. The rule of King Harsha (606–29 CE) also marked the height of peace and prosperity in northern India before the Muslim invasions began.

    Modern Period

In the 16th century, the Portuguese arrived and built ports along the Malabar Coast, followed by the Dutch and French. In 1665, Aurangzeb became emperor until his death in 1707. He initiated many military campaigns to expand the Mughal Empire, however, he also raised taxes heavily and brought much hardship upon the peasantry.

British East India Company started trading in India in the late 16th century, gradually gaining political power over time. By 1857, it had largely replaced native rulers in most regions of India. The company ruled directly through agents who administered local affairs, while the British government oversaw matters affecting the entire country.

    Contemporary Period

India gained independence from Britain in August 1947 after a large struggle for freedom led by Mahatma Gandhi. Initially there were two independent dominions - India and Pakistan - both having different histories since their separation. However, Pakistan has been divided into Bangladesh in December 1971 following its war of liberation against West Pakistan.
