Study Notes

  • Different types of Forests exist in India

Tropical Rain Forests (Evergreen Forests)

  • Grow in hot and rainy areas.
  • Areas receiving rainfall of more than 200 cm are ideal.
  • Commonly found along the Western Ghats.
  • Also found in the hilly areas of North-eastern India.
  • Present in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • Trees do not shed all their leaves at the same time, this is why they always appear green and are termed "Evergreen Forests".
  • Trees grow close to each other and are very tall.
  • They have broad and thick canopies that restricts the sunlight from reaching the ground.
  • Mahogany, ebony, sandalwood, and rosewood trees grow here.
  • The wood from these trees is hard and expensive.

Deciduous Forests

  • Cover more than half of India's total forest area.
  • Mostly located in the Deccan plateau and at the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains.
  • Also known as Monsoon Forests.
  • These trees shed their leaves during the dry season.
  • Provide useful trees like Teak, Sal, and Shisham.
  • The wood is soft and expensive and is used for furniture and buildings.

Thorn and Scrub Forests
