Climate and Features of Evergreen Forests

  • Evergreen forests are found in areas with high humidity, temperature ranging from 25°C to 27°C, and an annual rainfall of 200-300cm.
  • These forests have dense canopies, thick undergrowth, and are also known as "rainforests".
  • Evergreen trees are called so because different species shed their leaves at different times, making the forest appear green throughout the year.

Tropical Rainforests (Mawalana Forests)

  • Tropical rainforests have an annual rainfall of 20°C and 150-200 cm.
  • These forests are found in the lower slopes of the Himalayas, Northeast Deccan Plateau, and the eastern edge of the Western Ghats.
  • States where these forests are found include Odisha, MP, Bihar, TN, Karnataka, Tripura, Assam, UP, Uttarakhand, and Andhra Pradesh/Telangana.

Dry Deciduous Forests

  • Found in drier parts of North Western India, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Western Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat.
  • These forests have a rainfall of 25-100 cm and a temperature range of 20°C.
  • Trees in these forests shed their leaves for 6-8 weeks during the summer.

Species and Their Uses

  • Rosewood and Shiduan are used for making high-quality furniture.
  • Gurjan is used for making railway sleepers.
  • Toon, Irul, and bamboo are other types of trees found in these forests.
