Study Notes

Incident Response Protocols

  • General Inquiry Points: Gather location, responsiveness, medical history, trail/campsite/rapid name, age, phone number, vehicle accessibility.
  • Climber/Hiker Fall: Involve primary fire department, law enforcement, emergency medical services (EMS), NPS, special operations, and determine direction of travel (northbound/southbound). Contact Medbase for possible air medical. Describe the subject and any vehicle involved. Establish a staging area from the incident command (IC) on scene. Note the location on the bridge, specific trail name, fall distance, and climb name (if climbing incident), whether the patient is responsive, visible injuries, and high rail availability.
  • Pedestrian Incidents (e.g., suicide from bridge): Water landing and surface landing should be noted. Involve law enforcement, NPS, and Fayetteville FD. EMS for all other incident types.
  • Search and Rescue: If performing a search, note the location, age, gender, clothing description, height, weight, last seen, hair and eye color.
  • Fires: Involve NPS, primary fire department, director, deputy director, and OEMS. Assess fire size, presence of people near the fire, and any potential exposures.
  • Lost Rafters/Kayakers: Involve NPS, law enforcement, EMS, primary fire department, special operations, and air medical. Detail staging area, rapid name, duration of missing, visability, involvement, age, raft/kayak color, and clothing description.
