Important Battles Fought in India

  • Battle of Kalinga (261 B.C.): Ashoka defeated the Kalinga king and later embraced Buddhism.
  • Battle of Hydaspes (326 B.C.): Alexander the Great defeated the Paurava king Porus, but was impressed by his valour and returned his kingdom to him.
  • Battle of Chhandwar (1194 A.D.): Mohammed Ghori defeated Jayachandra of Kannauj.

Mughal Dynasty

  • First Battle of Panipat (1526 A.D.): Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodhi, marking the beginning of the Mughal Dynasty.

Anglo-Maratha Wars

  • First Anglo-Maratha War (1775–1782 A.D.): Fought between the British East India Company and the Maratha Empire, ending with the Treaty of Salbai, where the British returned all occupied territories to the Marathas.
  • Second Anglo-Maratha War (1803-1805 A.D.): British defeated the Marathas and annexed Tanjore, Surat, and Carnatic.
