Study Notes
Ilium
- Has 3 borders and 2 surfaces
- Upper border (iliac crest): Extends between anterior superior iliac spine and posterior superior iliac spine, forming an S-curve.
- Anterior two-thirds has inner and outer lips with intermediate area in between.
- Iliac tubercle: Bony prominence located on outer lip, approximately 5 cm behind anterior superior iliac spine.
- Posterior border: Begins at anterior superior iliac spine, ends at inferior iliac spine.
- Iliac spine: Forms upper margin of greater sciatic notch.
- Iliac fossa: Located on the inner/pelvic surface, separated by the arcuate line from other areas.
- Gluteal lines (3): Post, Middle, & Inferior, visible on outer surface.
- Auricular surface: Articulates with sacrum, synovial joint.
Pubis
- Anterior 1/5 of hip bone
- Has 3 surfaces (anterior, posterior, medial)
- Body of pubis: Articulates with medial surface of opposite bone, forming pubic symphysis.
- Pubic crest: Upper border, ends laterally in pubic tubercle.
- Superior pubic ramus: Has 3 surfaces- upper pectineal (bounded behind by pectineal line), posterior pelvic surface and inferior obturator surface.
- Inferior pubic ramus: Joins ischial ramus forming inferior pubic arch.
- Has 2 surfaces: Outer and Inner
Ischium
- Lower and posterior 2/5 of hip bone
- Body of ischium: Has 2 borders. The anterior border forms part of obturator foramen. The posterior border forms lower part of greater sciatic notch.
- Ischial spine: Located below greater sciatic notch.
- Lesser sciatic notch: Follows ischial spine, and is below lesser sciatic notch.
- Ischial tuberosity: Projects from body, divided by horizontal ridge into upper and lower parts.
- Upper part is quadrangular, divided by oblique ridge into upper lateral and lower medial areas.
- Lower part is triangular, divided by vertical ridge into medial and lateral parts.
