Set Notation and Venn Diagrams

• A set can be described in words, and additional elements can be added to it.
• Example sets include:
  • {Moscow, London, Cairo, Delhi, …} (cities)
  • {euro, dollar, yen, …} (currencies)
  • {Barcelona, Real Madrid, Benfica, Ajax, Juventus} (football teams)
  • {Beethoven, Mozart, Greig, Brahms} (composers)

Venn Diagrams

• A Venn diagram can be used to represent sets and their relationships.
• Example:
  • Set A and Set B can be described in words based on the diagram.
  • The intersection of Set A and Set B (A ∩ B) can be identified.

Sets of Numbers

• A set can be defined using a specific criteria, such as:
  • X = {square numbers up to 100}
  • Y = {cube numbers up to 100}
• A Venn diagram can be used to show the relationships between these sets.
• The intersection of the sets (X ∩ Y) can be identified.

Surveys and Set Notation

• A survey can be represented using set notation, where each set represents a category (e.g. having a rabbit, having a cat, etc.).
• The number of students in each set can be counted, and Venn diagrams can be used to show the relationships between the sets.
