IELTS Test Overview

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who want to study, work, or migrate where English is used as a language of communication. It provides a valid and reliable assessment of the candidate's ability to communicate in English across all four language skills – listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Components of the IELTS Test

Reading

The Reading section consists of three parts, each containing multiple-choice questions based on authentic texts from books, newspapers, magazines, and other materials relevant to those seeking to emigrate. These texts may involve simple or complex issues; they may require close attention and careful analysis.

Speaking

The Speaking component includes a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. This part of the test focuses on the candidate's oral fluency, grammatical range and accuracy, vocabulary, and pronunciation. It also assesses the candidate's ability to interact in English with various types of people within everyday social contexts.

Listening

The Listening section is made up of four sections, each containing ten questions. The passages are recorded by native speakers and cover topics relevant to those wishing to emigrate. The candidate listens to the material once only and then chooses the correct answer from a list of options.

Writing

The Writing section consists of two tasks, both of which are writing tasks. In Task 1, candidates write on a graph, chart, or diagram. In Task 2, candidates write an essay. The writing tasks are based on authentic texts that are designed to be of interest to the candidate.

IELTS Test Scores

The IELTS Test is graded on a banded score from 0 to 9, with 9 being the highest and 0 the lowest. The IELTS test is usually taken in countries where there is an official IELTS test center, or via the British Council or IDP Education.
