Study Notes
ICT IA4
- Project by Johan, Smaran, Sreejit and lan
Table of Contents
- Task 1: How a website is accessed when a user types a URL into a web browser
- Task 2: How data travels over networks
- Task 3: How data is kept secure from errors
Task 1: How a Website is Accessed
-
URLs (Uniform Resource Locators): Unique identifiers for resources on the internet, consisting of three parts:
- Protocol: Method for data exchange (e.g., https://)
- Domain Name: Text string linked to an IP address (e.g., www.google.com)
- Path: Location of a specific page/file (e.g., /areyoufeelinglucky)
-
DNS (Domain Name System): Acts as the internet's phone book
- Translates domain names into IP addresses, allowing computers to connect with servers.
Task 2: How Data Travels Over Networks
- Data transmission through cables is converted into binary code (1s and 0s)
- WiFi breaks data into smaller packets, translates them into bits, and routes them to their destination through routers and switches
- Cellular data uses radio waves to connect to a nearby cell tower. Data is sent to a data centre then to the requested service and waits for a response
- Bluetooth transmits data to another device using radio waves at 25mbps, operating at 2.45 ghz frequency, with a range of 10m
- Data can travel through different types of networks like mobile data, WiFi, and internet service providers' (ISP's) networks. A single request can utilize multiple network types (e.g mobile data, LAN, and internet backbone connections to get to the final destination.)
Task 3: Keeping Data Secure from Errors
- Ensuring secure and error-free data transmission requires several layers of safeguarding. This includes using a combination of:
- Encryption: Secure data encoding;
- Authentication: Verification of the sender and receiver;
- Error checking: Identifying and fixing potential issues;
- Secure network infrastructure: Robust systems and protocols
- Regular system maintenance: Proactive care for equipment and routines
- Systems also adopt error correction methods to minimize the impact of errors from hardware failures or human mistakes.
