Study Notes
Hypothalamus
- Maintains homeostasis by regulating thirst, water balance, hunger, autonomic nervous system, temperature, and sexual urges
- Regulates hunger
- Stimulated by ghrelin
- Inhibited by leptin
- Regulates satiety
- Stimulated by leptin
- Damage can cause anorexia or failure to thrive (infants) or hyperphagia (excess eating)
- Anterior Nucleus: regulates body cooling
- Posterior Nucleus:
- Suprachiasmatic Nucleus: regulates circadian rhythm
- Supraoptic Nuclei and Paraventricular Nuclei:
- Synthesize oxytocin
- Synthesize antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
- ADH and oxytocin are carried by neurophysins to the posterior pituitary, stored and released
- Preoptic Nucleus:
- Thermoregulation
- Sexual behavior
- Releases GnRH
- Kallmann syndrome: failure of GnRH-producing neurons to migrate from olfactory pit, causing Kallmann syndrome
Thalamus
- Major relay for ascending sensory information (except olfaction)
- Nuclei and their functions:
- Ventral Posterolateral (VPL) Nucleus: vibration, pain, proprioception, light touch
- Ventral Posteromedial (VPM) Nucleus: face sensation, taste
