17 Questions

What is the first step in the treatment of hyperthermia according to the given text?

ABC and treatment for shock

What action should be taken if heat stroke is suspected during the treatment of hyperthermia?

Cooling methods enroute

What is the first step in treating hypothermia according to the given text?

Assessment and treatment of ABCs

What should be done if a patient with hypothermia is in cardiac arrest according to the given text?

Perform CPR until the patient can be warmed in the hospital

Check pulse – rate and regularity How long may it need to be checked?

May need to check pulse for up to 1 minute

What is the recommended action for treating frostbite according to the given text?

Immobilize the extremity and pad between fingers and toes

What is the second step to be taken for hypothermia according to policy?

Do not allow re-freezing. (Do not thaw if serious danger of refreezing exists.)

What should be avoided during the treatment of frostbite according to the given text?

Rubbing the affected area to stimulate blood flow

What is the recommended oxygen flow rate for a near-drowning patient who is unstable?

15 liters/minute non-rebreathing mask

When should spine immobilization be considered during near-drowning treatment?

Only for patients with a history of diving or head trauma

Under what condition should a near-drowning patient be transported as Code 3?

Deteriorating respiratory or mental status, concurrent major trauma, unmanageable air

What is the recommended transport mode for awake and alert near-drowning patients?

Code 2 transport

What is the minimum assessment indicated for all victims with an unknown down time?

Assessing Glasgow Coma Scale and lung sounds

When should all cold water victims be resuscitated according to the given text?

Less than one hour submerged

What is recommended for the treatment of warm water victims submerged for less than 30 minutes?

Resuscitation

When should resuscitation be performed for all victims with an unknown time of submersion?

Regardless of water temperature

All unheated bodies of water should be considered as?

Cold water

Study Notes

Treatment of Hyperthermia

  • The first step in treating hyperthermia is to check pulse – rate and regularity.
  • If heat stroke is suspected during treatment, the patient should be cooled rapidly.

Treatment of Hypothermia

  • The first step in treating hypothermia is to check pulse – rate and regularity for at least 30 seconds.
  • If the patient is in cardiac arrest, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be initiated.

Treatment of Frostbite

  • The recommended action for treating frostbite is to rapidly re-warm the affected area.
  • Avoid rubbing or massaging the affected area during treatment.

Near-Drowning Treatment

  • The recommended oxygen flow rate for an unstable near-drowning patient is 10-15 liters per minute.
  • Spine immobilization should be considered during near-drowning treatment if the patient is unconscious or has a decreased level of consciousness.
  • A near-drowning patient should be transported as Code 3 if they are unstable or require ongoing resuscitation.
  • Awake and alert near-drowning patients should be transported via non-emergency mode.
  • A minimum assessment of CPR and oxygen administration is indicated for all victims with an unknown down time.
  • All cold water victims should be resuscitated according to the American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines.
  • Warm water victims submerged for less than 30 minutes can be treated with supportive care.
  • Resuscitation should be performed for all victims with an unknown time of submersion.
  • All unheated bodies of water should be considered as hypothermic.
