Study Notes
Hypertension Definition
- Sustained diastolic pressure greater than 90 mmHg or sustained systolic pressure greater than 140 mmHg.
- Approximately 25% of the general population experience hypertension.
Types of Hypertension
- Primary Hypertension - most cases of hypertension
- Secondary Hypertension - caused by specific conditions, like renal artery stenosis or renal failure.
Risk Factors of Primary Hypertension:
- Stress
- Obesity
- Smoking
- Lack of exercise
- Heavy salt consumption
Benign and Malignant Hypertension
- Benign Hypertension - Stable, and if managed properly, does not lead to rapid deterioration.
- Malignant Hypertension - Rapidly rising blood pressure that can be fatal within 1-2 years if left untreated.
- Characterized by severe hypertension (systolic pressure > 180 mmHg or diastolic pressure > 120 mmHg), renal failure, retinal hemorrhages and exudates.
Hypertension Vascular Morphology
- Hyaline Arteriolosclerosis - Associated with benign hypertension, marked by thickening of arteriolar walls with homogenous pink hyaline material.
- Hyperplastic Arteriolosclerosis - Associated with severe malignant hypertension, "onion skin" concentric, laminated wall thickening.
Complications of Hypertension
- Stroke
- Coronary heart disease
- Cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure
- Aortic dissection
- Multi-infarct dementia
- Renal failure
