Study Notes

Hybrid Integrated Circuits

  • A hybrid integrated circuit (HIC) is a miniaturized electronic circuit constructed of individual devices, such as semiconductor devices and passive components, bonded to a substrate or printed circuit board (PCB).
  • Hybrid circuits are often encapsulated in epoxy and serve as a component on a PCB, similar to a monolithic integrated circuit.
  • HICs combine two or more integrated circuit types or combine one or more integrated circuit types and discrete components.

Parts and Composition of a Hybrid Circuit

  • A hybrid microcircuit has microminiature components (transistors, semiconductor diodes, inductors, and so on) mounted on it, in addition to the usual elements that are permanently connected on the surface or contained within the material of the substrate.
  • The resistors, capacitors, contact areas, and electrical conductors in hybrid integrated circuits are fabricated using various methods, including the mask deposition method, photolithographic method, chemical method, or silk-screen method.

Difference between Monolithic and Hybrid IC

  • A monolithic integrated circuit has the full circuit constructed on a single piece of silicon or other semiconductor, enclosed in a package with connecting leads.
  • A hybrid circuit consists of a substrate carrying one or more silicon chips, which may themselves be monolithic integrated circuits, individual diodes, or transistors, along with resistors and conductive tracks deposited on the substrate.

Advantages of Hybrid IC

  • Reduced size, as hybrids usually contain un-packaged semiconductors.

Integrated Circuits (ICs)

  • An integrated circuit (IC) is a set of electronic circuits on one small plate of semiconductor materials, normally silicon.
  • ICs can be made very compact, having up to several billion transistors and other electronic components in an area the size of a human fingernail.
  • ICs are used in virtually all electronic equipment today and have revolutionized the world of electronics.

Types of Integrated Circuits (IC)

  • Monolithic Integrated Circuits
  • Thin (or Thick) Film Integrated Circuits
  • Hybrid Integrated Circuits

A hybrid integrated circuit is a miniaturized electronic circuit constructed of individual devices, such as semiconductor devices and passive components, bonded to a substrate. Learn about the characteristics and benefits of hybrid integrated circuits.
