Study Notes

Course Objectives

  • Name and describe the male and female reproductive organs
  • Describe the ovum and the process of ovulation

Quranic Verses

  • Allah created humans from a single cell (Quran 12:13)
  • Allah created humans from a clot of blood (Quran 13:14)
  • Allah created humans from a drop of semen (Quran 12:12)

Growth and Development

  • Growth: an increase in size of the body and various organs
  • Development: a process of functional and physiological maturation of the individual
  • Development includes:
    • Increase in skill and capacity to function
    • Related to maturation and myelination of the nervous system
    • Qualitative aspects
  • Development can be divided into:
    • Prenatal (before birth)
    • Postnatal (after birth) periods

Stages of Prenatal Growth and Development

  • Duration of development: approximately 280 days (about 10 lunar months)
  • Divided into three stages or periods:
    • Stage of zygote (week 1-2)
      • Characterized by all cells looking alike
    • Stage of embryo (week 3-8)
      • Characterized by formation of tissues, organs, and systems
    • Stage of fetus (week 9-birth)
      • Characterized by differentiation and growth

Processes of Development

  • Cell division: one cell divides into two, four, eight, etc.
  • Cell migration: certain cells migrate to another region and begin to function
  • Cell differentiation: a less specialized cell becomes a more specialized cell type
  • Growth: either due to an increase in size or an increase in number

Apoptosis

  • Programmed cell death
