Male Reproductive System
Structure
The human male reproductive system consists of several parts, including the testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate gland, bulbo-urethral glands, penis, and accessory sex glands. These structures play crucial roles in sperm production, maturation, storage, ejaculation, and fertilization.
Functions
The primary function of the male reproductive system is to produce and transport sperm from the testes, where they develop, to the penis during ejaculation. Sperm cells can survive outside the body in semen only briefly; thus, rapid movement into the female's reproductive tract upon ejaculation is essential for successful fertilization.
Female Reproductive System
Structure
The human female reproductive system comprises various components, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, and external genitalia. These structures are involved in ovum production, fertilization, pregnancy support, and delivery of the child.
Functions
The main role of the female reproductive system is to create an environment suitable for fertilized eggs to grow, develop, and eventually give birth. During menstrual cycles, an egg travels down one of the fallopian tubes, where it may meet and become fertilized by sperm. If implantation occurs, the growing embryo receives nourishment from the uterine lining, which thickens to support the developing fetus until birth.
