Study Notes
Aorta
- Major artery that carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
Left pulmonary artery
- Transports deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the left lung for oxygenation.
Left pulmonary veins
- Four veins that carry oxygenated blood from the left lung back to the left atrium.
Auricle of left atrium
- A small, ear-shaped pouch that expands the volume of the left atrium and aids in increased blood capacity.
Left atrium
- Chamber of the heart that receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs via the pulmonary veins.
Apex
- The pointed tip of the heart, located at the bottom, where the heart's contraction is strongest.
Great cardiac vein
- Vein that drains blood from the heart muscle (myocardium) and returns it to the coronary sinus.
Left ventricle
- Chamber of the heart responsible for pumping oxygenated blood to the body; walls are thick due to high pressure requirements.
Right ventricle
- Chamber that pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs for oxygenation.
Middle cardiac vein
- Vein that drains blood from the posterior part of the heart and empties into the coronary sinus.
Posterior interventricular artery
- Artery that supplies blood to the posterior walls of both ventricles and the interventricular septum.
Posterior vein of left ventricle
- Vein that drains blood from the left ventricle and leads to the coronary sinus.
Right coronary artery
- Artery supplying blood to the right side of the heart, including the right atrium and ventricle.
Coronary sinus
- Large vein that collects deoxygenated blood from the heart muscle and drains it into the right atrium.
Inferior vena cava
- Major vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower half of the body to the right atrium.
Right atrium
- Chamber of the heart receiving deoxygenated blood from the body through the superior and inferior vena cavae.
Right pulmonary veins
- Carry oxygenated blood from the right lung to the right atrium.
Right pulmonary artery
- Transports deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the right lung for oxygenation.
Superior vena cava
- Major vein that brings deoxygenated blood from the upper half of the body to the right atrium.
