    • Define growth and development
    • Mention types of growth and development
    • Mention the principles of growth and development
    • List factors affecting growth and development
    • Explain the stages of growth and development

Introduction

  • Growth and development (G&D) are continuous biologic processes that begin from conception till death
  • It is the responsibility of pediatric nurses to be able to perform complete assessment of children's growth and development from birth through adolescence, early detection of any deviation and provide nursing care based on child's needs for each stage

Definitions of G&D:

  • Growth: refers to an increase in physical size of the whole body or any of its parts. It is simply a quantitative change in the child's body. It can be measured in Kilograms, pounds, centimeters, inches, etc.
  • Development: refers to a progressive increase in skills and capacity of function. It is a qualitative change in the child's functioning. It can be measured through observation
  • Maturation: refers to increase in child's competence and adaptability. It is describing the qualitative change in a structure. The level of maturation depends on child's heredity

Importance of Growth and Development for Nurses:

  • Knowing what to expect of child's G&D at any stage
