Study Notes

The Eye's Structure and Function

  • The lens in the eye changes shape to focus light on the retina, allowing us to see objects clearly at varying distances.
  • Ciliary muscles contract and relax to alter the lens's curvature, enabling the eye to focus on near or far objects.

Retina's Location

  • The retina is located at the back of the eye, lining the innermost layer of the eyeball.

Light Signal to the Brain

  • Light enters the eye through the cornea, passes through the lens, and hits the retina, where it stimulates photoreceptors (rods and cones).
  • The stimulated photoreceptors send electrical signals through the optic nerve to the brain, where they are interpreted as visual information.

The Pupil's Function

  • The pupil, a hole in the center of the iris, regulates the amount of light entering the eye by adjusting its diameter.
  • In bright light, the pupil constricts to reduce light entrance, and in dim light, it dilates to allow more light in.
