Study Notes

Human Computer Interaction (HCI) - CSBP 316

  • HCI is the study, design, construction, and implementation of human-centric interactive computer systems
  • During its early years, HCI was known as man-machine studies.
  • Computer-Human Interaction (CHI) is another term for HCI
  • HCI is concerned with the communication between human users and computers.

What is HCI

  • HCI is the communication between a human user and a software application or hardware device.
  • The hardware device provides services via a computer program
  • HCI is not just about computers, but includes many real-world examples like VCR's, wristwatches, phones, copiers, cars, plane cockpits, and air traffic control

Why HCI

  • Systems fail due to inadequate requirements, lack of user participation, lack of resources, unrealistic expectations, changing specifications, and lack of planning. These failures represent 13%, 12%, 11%, 10%, 9%, and 8% respectively of the causes of system failure.
  • Usable products are easy to learn, effective to use, enjoyable, and allow users to complete tasks safely, effectively, efficiently, and enjoyably
  • A business perspective argues that employing people more productively and effectively is crucial, as people costs now outweigh hardware and software costs. Users expect easy-to-use systems. Poorly designed systems are generally not accepted.
  • Human limitations and costly errors are key concerns in HCI
  • Errors in critical systems can result in loss of time, money, lives, and morale.

User Experience (UX)

  • UX refers to how a product behaves and is used in the real world.
  • It's impossible to design user experience. Only a design for a user experience can be created.
  • A meaningful UX creates joy, excitement, pleasure, and fun for users.
  • A UX study investigates users and their needs within their context, focusing on the user at every stage of the design process.
  • A positive user experience (UX) is one that is easy, not complicated

Usability

  • Usability is the degree to which a software/application can be used by specified users to achieve quantified objectives with effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction.
  • Important factors for a usable software system include:
    • Ease of learning
    • High speed of user task performance
    • Low user error rate
    • Subjective user satisfaction
    • User retention over time
  • Six key goals for usability include:
    • Effectiveness
    • Efficiency
    • Safety
    • Utility
    • Learnability
    • Memorability

Improving Interfaces

  • Improve interfaces by educating software professionals on User-Centered Design (UCD)
  • Incorporate UI (User Interface) design methods and techniques into standard software development methodologies.
