Transportation in human beings refers to the movement of essential molecules, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, and cellular waste materials, between various cells and organs within the body. This process is facilitated by the circulatory system, which includes the heart and blood vessels.
Structure and Functioning of the Heart
The heart is a muscular organ responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. It is divided into four chambers: two upper chambers known as the atria and two lower chambers called the ventricles. The atria receive blood from other parts of the body, while the ventricles send blood out to other parts through major vessels.
Blood Vessels
There are three main types of blood vessels: arteries, veins, and capillaries. Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to various organs, while veins return deoxygenated blood back to the heart. Capillaries, the smallest of the three, facilitate the exchange of substances between the cells and the circulating blood.
Circulatory Pathways
The circulatory system divides into two pathways: pulmonary circulation and systemic circulation. In pulmonary circulation, oxygenated blood returns from the lungs to the heart, where it enters the left atrium and ventricle before being pumped out to the lungs again. Systemic circulation distributes oxygenated blood throughout the body, except to the lungs, and collects carbon dioxide waste product, returning it to the heart via the superior and inferior vena cava.

Human beings require a transportation system to deliver oxygen and nutrients to every cell, remove waste products like carbon dioxide, and maintain the overall balance of bodily fluids within cells and organs. Oxygen, which we breathe in, is transported by red blood corpuscles (erythrocytes) in our bloodstream. Similarly, nutrient molecules obtained from our diet are carried by blood plasma to different parts of the body where they are needed. On the other hand, waste materials produced by cellular processes are carried by blood plasma to locations for removal, primarily the kidneys, liver, and lungs.
