Study Notes
Brain Stem
- The brain stem connects directly to the spinal cord.
- Majority of the cranial nerves originate from the brain stem.
- The brain stem is responsible for the coordination and planning of skilled movements, such as dancing.
Cerebrum
- The cerebrum is the largest part of the human brain.
- The cerebrum is divided into two hemispheres: the right and left cerebral hemispheres.
- The white appearance of the cerebrum is due to the myelin sheath.
Cerebrum: Hemispheres
- Each hemisphere of the cerebrum is further divided into lobes.
- The frontal lobe controls the trunk, arms, and lower limbs, but these areas have less representation than their size suggests because they do not perform complex movements.
Primary Motor Cortex
- Damage to the right motor cortex will cause paralysis on the left side of the body.
- Not all body parts are represented equally in the primary motor cortex.
- Areas that perform more fine motor movements, such as the fingers, face, and tongue, have a greater representation in the motor cortex.
