Flashcards
Urinary System
Urinary System
The system responsible for filtering waste from the blood and eliminating it through urine. It includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.
Reproductive System
Reproductive System
The system responsible for the production of offspring. It includes the male and female reproductive organs.
Body Cavities
Body Cavities
Internal spaces within the body that house and protect vital organs. The main cavities are the dorsal cavity (cranial and vertebral) and ventral cavity (thoracic and abdominopelvic).

Study Notes
Overview of the Human Body
- The human body is a complex system composed of interconnected organs and structures.
- It functions at different levels, from cellular to organismal.
- Anatomy studies the structure and form of organs and structures.
- Physiology and anatomy work together to understand how the body functions.
Organization of the Body
- Body components are organized hierarchically:
- Cells form tissues.
- Tissues combine to form organs.
- Organs combine to form organ systems.
- Organ systems work together to form the whole organism.
Major Organ Systems
-
Integumentary System: The body's external covering, including skin, hair, nails, and glands. Protects underlying tissues, regulates temperature, and senses stimuli.
-
Skeletal System: Provides support, protection, and movement. Made of bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. Supports the body, protects organs, allows muscle attachment, and facilitates movement.
-
Muscular System: Enables movement through skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles. Responsible for locomotion, posture, and heat production.
-
Nervous System: Regulates body functions using nerve impulses. Contains the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system. Facilitates rapid communication and coordination between body parts.
-
Endocrine System: Controls body functions through hormones secreted by glands into the bloodstream. Regulates metabolism, growth, development, and other essential processes.
-
Cardiovascular System: Circulates blood throughout the body. Consists of the heart, blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries), and blood. Transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products.
-
Lymphatic/Immune System: Defends against disease. Includes lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, and lymphoid organs. Removes excess fluid from tissues and protects against pathogens.
-
Respiratory System: Facilitates gas exchange using the lungs, trachea, and other breathing structures. Exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood.
-
Digestive System: Processes food for absorption. Composed of the alimentary canal and accessory organs (liver, pancreas, gallbladder). Breaks down food into absorbable nutrients.
-
Urinary System: Eliminates waste products. Includes kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Filters blood and eliminates waste products in urine.
-
Reproductive System: Enables procreation. Includes male and female reproductive organs.
Body Cavities
- The body has internal cavities that house and protect vital organs.
- Major cavities include the dorsal cavity (cranial and vertebral) and the ventral cavity (thoracic and abdominopelvic).
Anatomical Directions
- Anatomical directional terms describe locations:
- Superior, inferior, anterior, posterior, medial, lateral, proximal, distal, superficial, and deep.
Anatomical Planes
- Planes section the body for study:
- Sagittal, coronal (frontal), and transverse (horizontal) planes.
- These sections reveal internal structures.
Body Regions
- The body is divided into regions based on locations and landmarks.
Basic Tissue Types
- Epithelial: Covers body surfaces and lines body cavities.
- Connective: Supports and connects other tissues.
- Muscle: Contracts to facilitate movement.
- Nervous: Transmits nerve impulses for communication.
Cell Structure and Function
- All body functions start at the cellular level.
- Cells are the basic unit of life, supporting body functions.
