Study Notes

Skin

  • Divided into two main parts: epidermis (superficial) and dermis (deep)
  • Epidermis is a stratified epithelium, found on palms of hands and soles of feet, and is extremely thick to resist wear and tear
  • Dermis is composed of dense connective tissue, containing blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves
  • Dermis is connected to the underlying deep fascia, also known as subcutaneous tissue

Skin Appendages

  • Include nails, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands

Fascia

  • Two main types: superficial fascia and deep fascia
  • Superficial fascia lies between skin and underlying muscles and bones, and is composed of loose areolar and adipose tissue
  • Superficial fascia unites the dermis of the skin to the underlying deep fascia
  • Deep fascia is a membranous layer of connective tissue, investing deeper structures of the body
  • Deep fascia forms well-defined layers in the neck

Learn about the basic structure of skin, including the epidermis and dermis, and their functions in human anatomy. This quiz covers the characteristics of each layer and their importance in the body.
