Movement in a Straight Line
- Movement is described as one-directional, which can be straight, curved, or both.
- The speed of an object is equal to the distance covered in a time of 1 second, 1 minute, or 1 hour.
- Uniform motion is when the average speed is equal to the instantaneous speed.
- Speed multiplied by time equals distance.
- Distance and time are two factors describing an object's motion.
- Units of speed are m/s and km/h.
- Relative speed of a moving object compared to a stationary observer is the same as the actual speed.
- Relative speed of a moving object compared to a moving observer moving in the same direction and at the same speed is zero.
- Relative speed of a moving object compared to a moving observer moving in the opposite direction and at the same speed is twice the actual speed.
Calculating Speed
- Speed = Distance / Time
- Average speed = Total distance / Total time
- Relative speed changes depending on the observer's motion.
- If the observer is stationary, relative speed equals actual speed.
- If the observer is moving in the opposite direction, relative speed = actual speed + observer's speed.
- If the observer is moving in the same direction, relative speed = actual speed - observer's speed.
- If the observer is moving in the same direction and at the same speed, relative speed = 0.
Graphing Motion
- Graphing distance against time for uniform motion shows a straight line with a positive slope passing through the origin.
- Graphing speed against time for uniform motion shows a horizontal line parallel to the time axis.
- The rate of change of distance is speed, and the rate of change of speed is acceleration.
- Units of speed are m/s; units of acceleration are m/s².
- Initial speed is zero when an object starts from rest and moves with uniform positive acceleration.
- Final speed (v₂) is greater than initial speed (v₁) when an object moves with positive acceleration.
- An object moving with negative acceleration means its speed decreases over time.
- Uniform motion means zero acceleration.
- Final speed of an object moving from rest with uniform acceleration is determined by the equation v₂ = u + at.
- Uniform acceleration means an object's speed increases by equal amounts in equal time intervals.
- Zero acceleration means an object has uniform motion.
- The ratio of final speed to initial speed for an object with negative acceleration is less than 1.
Acceleration
- Acceleration = Change in speed / Time
- Acceleration is the rate of change in speed.
- Uniform acceleration is when an object's speed changes by equal amounts in equal time intervals.
- Positive acceleration means increasing speed.
- Negative acceleration means decreasing speed.
