Norman Foster is a British architect and designer, born in Reddish, Lancashire, in 1935. He is a leading figure in British modernist architecture and associated with high-tech architecture. Foster's architectural firm, Foster + Partners, is the largest in the United Kingdom and has international offices. Foster is the president of the Norman Foster Foundation, founded to promote interdisciplinary thinking and research in architecture and design. Foster won the Pritzker Prize in 1999. He attended Burnage Grammar School for Boys, where he was bullied and took up reading. Foster completed his national service in the Royal Air Force in 1953. In 1963, he established his own architectural practice, Team 4, with Richard Rogers, Su Brumwell, and the Cheesman sisters. Foster Associates was founded in 1967 with Wendy Cheesman. From 1968 to 1983, Foster collaborated with American architect Richard Buckminster Fuller on several projects. Foster's firm concentrated on industrial buildings until 1969 when it worked on the administrative and leisure center for Fred. Olsen Lines in the London Docklands. The firm's breakthrough project was the completion of the Willis Faber & Dumas headquarters in Ipswich in 1975. Foster designed the HSBC Main Building in Hong Kong in the 1980s. In the 1990s, Foster designed the Millau Viaduct in Southern France. He worked with Steve Jobs from about 2009 to design the Apple offices, Apple Campus 2, in Cupertino, California. Foster was made a Knight Bachelor in 1990 and was appointed to the Order of Merit in 1997. In 1999, Foster was raised to the peerage as Baron Foster of Thames Bank, of Reddish in the County of Greater Manchester. Foster received The Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. He was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, and in 2008, he was granted an honorary degree from the Dundee School of Architecture. In 2009, he received the Prince of Asturias Award in the category 'Arts'. In 2012, Foster was among the British cultural figures selected by artist Sir Peter Blake to appear in a new version of his most famous artwork.
