Functions and Responsibilities of Traffic Section

• Traffic enforcement and operations must be well-organized and specialized to promote motorist safety.
• The Traffic Section is divided into Eastern and Western regions, reporting to the assigned Traffic Supervisor, and established under the control of the District Support Division Commander.
• The District Support Division Commander is responsible for coordinating traffic law enforcement activities and direct responsibility for all traffic enforcement operations.
• The Traffic Section provides specialized traffic-related services and support to patrol units, including accident investigation, enforcement countermeasures programs against impaired drivers, and traffic law enforcement.
• The Traffic Section enforces street traffic regulations and state vehicle laws, makes arrests for traffic violations, investigates accidents, and cooperates with traffic engineers and officers to improve traffic conditions.
• The Traffic Section maintains order on streets and highways, reduces losses due to accidents, and gathers facts about accident occurrences.
• The Traffic Section assists accident victims by rendering first-aid, requesting transportation for injured persons, and protecting property and vehicles.
• The Traffic Section assists traffic safety education agencies and proposes corrective actions to achieve safer and efficient motor vehicle and pedestrian travel and vehicle parking.
• The Traffic Section plans for traffic routing and direction, removal of vehicles and other traffic hazards, crowd control, and emergency vehicle access during emergencies or catastrophes.
• The Traffic Section enforces laws related to driving while intoxicated and assigns personnel to locations and times where a significant number of violations and/or collisions involving impaired drivers have occurred.
• The Traffic Section performs technical accident investigation, parking and traffic control, operation of speed measuring devices, intoxilyzer breath test equipment, specialized traffic congestion, traffic and school safety programs, and public information.
• The Traffic Section aggressively enforces speed, seatbelt laws, motorcycle violations, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and littering for the reduction and prevention of traffic accidents.
