Study Notes
- Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) is a priority for the Sarawak Government.
- There has been a significant decrease in timber production over the past decade in Sarawak due to low commercial timber stocking in Permanent Forest Estate (PFE).
- There is a lack of comprehensive study to determine the effectiveness of cutting limits in Sarawak.
- A study will be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of current minimum cutting limits in logged-over forests in Sarawak.
- The study will evaluate the growth rate of 10 selected timber species in Permanent Forest Estate (PFE) in a selected Forest Management Unit (FMU) in Sarawak.
- The forest area for the study is located in Kapit, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri and Lawas in Sarawak.
- The study will use forest inventory to measure and record the tree, shrubs, and other vegetation in the forest.
- The data collected from the inventory will be used to estimate the number of trees in the forest, the species composition, and the health of the trees.
- Tree growth data of timber species will be obtained via sampling data curation from the previous Permanent Sample Plot (PSP).
- The expected outcome of the study is to determine the estimated tree stocking, the growth rate of the ten (10) selected timber tree species groups, and to develop a modeling system to determine the optimal rotation aged based on the growth rate of the timber groups.
