Uniform Classifications
- Houston Fire Department uniforms are classified into four classes: Dress, Class A, Class B, and Class C (Duty Uniform).
Dress Uniform
- Comprises long sleeve shirt (white for Chief Officers, blue for others), tie, shoulder epaulets, collar brass, badge, name tag, dress pants, black dress shoes, and a department-issued uniform hat.
- Awards may be worn if applicable; dress jacket can be purchased if not issued to a member.
- Collar brass displays rank insignia for officers and HFD insignia for Engineer/Operators and Firefighters.
- Worn for department funerals, court, public meetings, and seminars representing the department.
Class A Uniform
- Includes long sleeve shirt (white for Chief Officers, blue for other ranks), tie, collar brass, badge, name tag, dress pants, black dress shoes, and uniform hat.
- Similar collar brass requirements as Dress Uniform.
Class B Uniform
- Features short or long sleeve button-down shirt (white for Chief Officers, blue for others), tactical pants, collar brass, badge, name tag, ID badge, and black dress shoes (Wellington or solid black athletic shoes allowed for emergency response personnel).
- Must wear the HFD Identification Badge when responding to medical emergencies, displaying EMS certification.
- To be worn in community interactive assignments unless stated otherwise.
Class C Uniform
- Known as the duty uniform, includes department-approved Polo Shirt or T-shirt, tactical pants, ID badge, black shoes, and dark blue socks.
- Worn for station duties, training, and emergency responses.
- Must display HFD Identification Badge during medical emergencies.
Uniform Maintenance
- Members must maintain at least one uniform from Class A, Class B, and Class C in their personal lockers.
- Class B button-down shirts should be available when reporting for work, including fill-ins and overtime assignments.
Additional Uniform Items
- T-shirts display the official HFD logo (white for Chief Officers, navy with golden print for Officers, silver for Engineer/Operators and Firefighters).
- Navy blue baseball caps with "Houston Fire" allowed with Class C uniforms; must be kept in good condition.
Wool Pullovers
- Permitted during winter, subject to conditions (e.g., no face covering, smooth texture, navy blue color only).
Uniform Regulations
- Members required to wear job-appropriate clothing; officers responsible for adherence to guidelines.
- Uniforms must be clean and neat; wearing old uniforms must exclude HFD patches.
