Early History of Hong Kong
- Hong Kong became part of the Qin Dynasty in 214 BC
- Historic times of Hong Kong began with the arrival of the Han people from mainland China in the 10th century
- Four major dialect groups formed distinct communities in Hong Kong: Cantonese, Hakka, Fuklo, and boat people
Cantonese
- Also known as ‘Punti’
- Moved from Guangdong to Hong Kong in the 10th century
- Settled in fertile plains in northern New Territories
- Spoke Wai Tau dialect
- Large families became famous local clans later on
Hakka
- Means ‘guest’
- Moved from Guangdong and Fujian to Hong Kong in the 17th century
- Settled in relatively distant and infertile regions in the New Territories
- Spoke Hakka dialect
Boat People
- Known as Tanka in the past
- Settled along the coast of the New Territories and Hong Kong Island
- Spoke Min dialects and Cantonese
- Most of them lived on boats
Fuklo
- Also known as the Hoklo
- Moved from Fujian and east of Guangdong to Hong Kong around the 11th century
- Settled along the eastern waters of Hong Kong

Five Great Clans of the New Territories
- A clan is a large group of families with the same ancestor and surname
- The Punti had about 40 clans
- The Tangs, the Haus, the Pangs, the Lius, and the Mans were the most powerful, known as the Five Great Clans of the New Territories
- These clans settled in the New Territories during the Sung and Ming Dynasties
- They had great economic power and influence
Clashes with the British
- In 1899, Britain and China signed the Convention Respecting an Extension of Hong Kong’s Territory
- The Five Great Clans led the villagers to fight against the British, but were suppressed
- The British dismantled the iron gates of Kat Hing Wai and shipped them back to Britain
