Hoffman Estates Fire Department Standard Operating Guidelines
Response Guidelines - Code 1/Ambulance Request
- Purpose: To provide standardized responses to ambulance requests by Northwest Central Dispatch (NWCD)
- Policy: Follow this guideline, but may be altered for a more appropriate response based on information received from NWCD or to achieve a faster response
Procedure
- Ambulance Response Information:
- Districts 21, 23, and 24: District engine and ambulance, or closest available units will respond
- District 22:
- When Ambulance 22 is in service, the response will be the district ambulance and Squad 22 or the closest units
- On alpha and bravo dispatches, the Squad response is at the discretion of the station officers
- Additional Assistance:
- If required, Tower 22 and Battalion 6 shall be requested to the scene (if not already on scene)
- If additional assistance is required during transport to the hospital, personnel should be taken from Tower 22
- Interstate 90-Tollway Responses:
- Westbound 56.1-59.25: Eng. 24, Amb. 24, & Twr 22
- Eastbound 58.5-62.5: Eng. 24, Amb. 24, & Twr 22
- Westbound 59.25-61.8: Twr 22, Amb. 22, & Squad 22
- Eastbound 62.5-66.0: Twr 22, Amb. 22, & Squad 22
Transport Criteria
- Transportation to Hospital:
- All medical emergency transporting of patients will be to St. Alexius Medical Center, with exceptions:
- Lutheran General Hospital - Level I Trauma and situations involving carbon monoxide poisoning
- Stroke Centers - Follow NWCH SOP for transport decision tree
- Another hospital under specific conditions (direction of Medical Control/ECRN, MABAS, or proximity)
- All medical emergency transporting of patients will be to St. Alexius Medical Center, with exceptions:
- Refusal of Transportation:
- If patient refuses transportation, telemetry/cellular phone communication with the system hospital should be made with documentation of the situation
- Paramedics can then transfer responsibility to private ambulance services of equal or greater level of care

- Code 1/Ambulance Request: Any response of a medical nature, including carbon monoxide with symptoms
- Basic Life Support (BLS): A basic level of pre-hospital and inter-hospital emergency care, including airway management, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), control of shock and bleeding, and splinting of fracture
- Advanced Life Support (ALS): An advanced level of pre-hospital and inter-hospital emergency care, including basic life support care, cardiac monitoring, cardiac defibrillation, intravenous therapy, administration of medications, and use of adjunctive medical devices
