History of Volleyball
- Volleyball was invented on February 9, 1895, by William G. Morgan, a Physical Director of Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
- The game was initially called "Mintonette" but was later changed to "Volleyball" in 1896.
- The first volleyball net was borrowed from tennis, and the ball was introduced in 1900, which was lighter and smaller than a basketball.
Development of Volleyball
- By 1913, the growth of the game was evident, and it was organized in Manila.
- The points per set changed from 21 to 15 points in 1917.
- Setting and spiking emerged in the Philippines, which was called "BOMBA" in April 1947.
- The FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball) was established in 1947, and the first World Championships for men were held in 1949 in Prague and for women in 1952 in Moscow.
- Volleyball was granted Olympic status in 1957 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
- Volleyball made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 1964 Games.
Rules of Volleyball
- A volleyball team consists of 6 players each side, including a setter, middle blocker, outside hitter, weakside hitter, and libero.
- Setter: orchestrates the team's offense and sets the ball up for spikes for teammates.
- Middle blocker: plays both offense and defense, initiates blocks on spikes, and attacks balls set in the middle of the court.
- Outside hitter: team's primary attacker, plays on the left side of the court, and is responsible for spiking.
- Weakside hitter: on the opposite side of the court, is a primary defender against the opposition team's outside hitter.
- Libero: primarily responsible for passing, receiving, and helping the team with defensive skills.
Court and Ball
- The volleyball court is 18 meters long and 9 meters wide.
- The men's net is 2.43 meters tall, and the women's net is 2.24 meters tall.
- The volleyball ball weighs 260-290 grams and has a circumference of 65-67 cm.
- A volleyball match is best of 5 sets, with the first to 25 points winning, and 15 points in overtime.
