World Civil Defence Day

  • The first-ever World Civil Defence Day was observed in 1990 by the United Nations (UN).
  • Civil Defence Day was officially inaugurated by the ICDO in 2012.
  • March 1st marks the anniversary of the ICDO’s constitution coming into force, which was adopted on 17th October 1966 and came into force on 1st March 1972.

International Civil Defence Organisation (ICDO)

  • Established in 1931 as the “Association des Lieux de Genève” in Paris, France, and renamed as International Civil Defence Organisation (ICDO) in 1958.
  • Became an intergovernmental organisation (IO) in 1972.
  • Contributes to the development of structures ensuring the protection and assistance of populations and safeguards property and the environment in the face of natural and man-made disasters.
  • Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, with 60 member states, 16 observer states, and 22 affiliated members.

Civil Accounts Day
