History of Central Philippine University
- Central Philippine University (CPU) originated from the Baptist Mission in the Philippines.
- In 1898, Rev. Dr. Eric Lund baptized Braulio Manikan, the first Filipino Baptist who translated the Gospels into Hiligaynon.
- The American Baptist Foreign Missionary Society (ABFMS) supported the efforts that began in Iloilo in May 1900, establishing churches in Iloilo, Negros, and Capiz.
- In 1901, Rev. Charles Briggs advocated for founding a school.
- The idea for a boys' school was noted in 1903 by Dr. Joseph Robbins and Dr. Peter.
- The Philippine Baptist Mission Conference (PBMC) was organized in Iloilo by eleven Baptist missionaries in 1904.
- PBMC approved the establishment of an Industrial school for boys and a Bible school to educate pastors on December 2, 1904.
- Rev. William O. Valentine became the principal of the two schools, which opened on October 1, 1905, with an increase in enrollment from 20 to nearly 300 students by 1907.
- The first year of high school commenced in 1915-1916 with 58 students, leading to the first graduation with 17 students in March 1921.
- The school was renamed from Jaro Industrial School to Central Philippine School in 1921, then to Central Philippine College in 1922.
- A Junior College was established in June 1923, and the college was divided into Departments of Education and Liberal Arts and Theology.
- CPU faced devastation during World War II, with buildings destroyed and students seeking refuge in the mountains.
- On April 1, 1953, Central Philippine College officially became Central Philippine University, located on a 24-hectare campus.
