- Originally called the cha-cha-cha, it emerged from the mambo and the danzón
- Enrique Jorrin, a violinist and composer, noticed the crowds struggled to adapt the danzón-mambo rhythm to the cha-cha-cha
- He developed a triple step rhythm, emphasizing the first beat, which is what created a new sound based on how dancers tapped their feet on the floor
