History of Ancient Nepal
Ancient Nepal was home to diverse peoples with distinct cultures and languages. It is believed that this region has been inhabited since around 650 BC by tribes such as Khasas, Kiratas, and Newars. One of the earliest known civilizations in this area were the Indo-Aryans who invaded from northwest India between 1500 BCE and 700 BCE. These migrants played a major role in shaping the culture and society of ancient Nepal due to their influence over agricultural practices. During these times, several kingdoms existed including those of Asuras, Devas, Yakshas, Gandharvas, Apsarases, Raksashas, and Nagas. Some notable rulers during this period included King Jata Sena and his son King Narendra Sena.
In religious terms, Buddhism became prominent among other religions practiced in ancient Nepal. This religion had its origin in Gautama Buddha's teachings and preaching activities spread throughout Kathmandu Valley in the valley of five gods towards Tiratha Rajya. Other deified figures associated with Buddhist beliefs during this era were Bodhisattva, Vajra, Prahlada, Mahabali, Sarvamangala, Mukunda, Bhagavati, Indrayana, Martanda, Virupaka, Matanga, Padmanabha, Dharmadhatu, Chaturbhuja, Lokeshwara, Shantiswara, Haribhadra, Sakadevi, Karunika, Bijaya, Vasundhara, Prajapati, Lokeshvara, and others.
The Vedic tradition also came into existence around the 9th century CE when Nepal began trading domesticated animals like cattle for imported copper. There are evidences of trade taking place within the valley of five gods using salt, iron, gold, silver, lead, brass, copper, tin, coal, zinc, and wood; and outside the valley through bartering dealings involving woolen clothes and ivory. Additionally, agriculture flourished, particularly paddy rice cultivation.
Overall, ancient Nepal saw various cultural influences mix while maintaining local traditions, leading up until the rise of Hindu dynasties later on.
