Chapter 1 Introduction: What, Where, How, and When?
- Rasheeda, while reading a newspaper, wondered how people could know about events from hundreds of years ago.
- Finding out about the past involves various methods including listening to the radio, watching television, reading newspapers, and asking people who remember.
- We can learn about the past by understanding what people ate, the clothes they wore, the houses they lived in, and the lives of various professions (hunters, herders, rulers, merchants, artists, musicians, scientists, etc.).
- Historical records also reveal the games children played, stories they heard, plays they saw, and songs they sang.
Where Did People Live?
- People have lived along the banks of the Narmada River for hundreds of thousands of years.
- Early people were skilled gatherers, collecting food from the surrounding forests, including roots, fruits, and hunted animals.
Early Agriculture and Civilization
- The earliest agriculture was developed north of the Vindhyas, cultivating crops like wheat and barley.
- Indus River and its tributaries are important locations for early cities.
- Cities later developed along the Ganga and its tributaries, and coastal regions.
- The area around the Ganga River, southward, was known as Magadha, featuring powerful kingdoms.
Methods of Finding the Past
- Discovering manuscripts (writings on palm leaves or birch bark) offers insights about the past.
- Inscriptions (writings on hard surfaces like stone or metal) were used to record important orders or events.
- Archaeological discoveries include remains of buildings, paintings, sculptures, tools, weapons, pots, and coins.
Historical Timelines
- Objects and artefacts provide information about the past, such as ways of cooking, carving stone, composing music, and cultural traditions.
- Dating methods include "Before Christ" (BC) or "Before Common Era" (BCE) and "Anno Domini" (AD) or "Common Era" (CE) to understand timelines, which are usually traced back from the present.
