Study Notes
History of the Internet
- The Internet originated as ARPANET, a networking project by the Pentagon's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA).
- Its goal was to allow scientists at different locations to share information and function even if parts of the network were disabled.
- ARPANET became functional in September 1969, with only four host nodes.
- By 1984, the Internet had grown to over 1,000 host nodes.
- Today, the Internet has more than 350 million host nodes.
- The Internet is a public, cooperative, and independent network, meaning no single entity controls it.
- Several organizations set standards, including the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and Internet2 (I2).
How to Connect to the Internet
- Slow-speed connection technologies include dial-up access using a standard telephone line.
- High-speed connection technologies include DSL, Cable Telephone Internet services (CATV), cable modems, fixed wireless, and satellite modems.
- Dial-up access requires a connection to be established each time you log on, while high-speed connections are always on.
- ISPs, Regional or National OSPs (like AOL and MSN), and Wireless Internet Service Providers are ways to access the internet.
Domain Names
- A domain name is the text version of an Internet Protocol (IP) address
- The IP address is a unique number that identifies each computer or device connected to the internet.
The World Wide Web
- The World Wide Web (WWW) is a worldwide collection of electronic documents, also known as Web pages.
- Web pages can contain text, graphics, sound, video, and built-in connections.
- A Web site is a collection of related Web pages.
- A Web browser is a program that allows you to view Web pages.
- Popular browsers include Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Safari.
- Downloading refers to the process of a computer receiving information from the internet.
- This process can take seconds to minutes depending on the connection speed.
- A subject directory is a search tool that uses an organized set of topics and subtopics, allowing users to find information by clicking links rather than entering keywords.
- A search engine is a program used to find Web sites and Web pages by entering words or phrases called search text, also known as keywords.
