- Nursing students should only discuss PHI in relation to their education or patient care.
- Steps should be taken to ensure that conversations about PHI are not overheard by individuals who do not have a need to know.
- Discussions about PHI should not take place in elevators or cafeterias.
- Computer screens should be protected from others while working, and logging out should be done when finished.
- When preparing assignments or documents, patient/client information should be identified by initials only.
- Other demographic data should only be used to the extent necessary to identify the patient and their needs for the instructor.
