High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hsCRP)
High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) is a protein produced in the liver and serves as a general inflammatory marker. Measuring hsCRP levels can be beneficial for assessing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
Studies have shown that hsCRP is an independent predictor of diverse end points, including coronary artery disease (CAD). High hsCRP levels have been observed in Indian populations, with mean values ranging from 1.0 to 2.9 mg/L (median, 1.88 mg/L) in control groups. Among patients with established CVD, hsCRP values varied widely, from 2.46 to 9.3 mg/L.
Metabolic Syndrome
Nine of the studies (37.5%) included in the review focused on hsCRP levels in patients with metabolic syndrome, including diabetes.
Abdominal Adiposity and Body Mass Index (BMI)
Six of the studies (25%) assessed the correlation between hsCRP levels and abdominal adiposity and BMI.
Predictive Value
None of the studies evaluated the sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of hsCRP in CAR prediction.
Determining Chances of Developing CVD
Recent studies suggest that hsCRP could be a marker for individuals without apparent risk factors who may be at risk of developing heart disease. Elevated hsCRP levels (1.0 mg/L) have been linked to an increased risk of stroke, sudden cardiac death, and peripheral arterial disease, even among individuals with cholesterol levels within an acceptable range.
