Heredity Review Guide: "Thank You Kenidy"
- Test Breakdown:
- 20 multiple choice questions (30 minutes)
- 4 free response questions (40 minutes)
- Definition list (20 minutes)
Definitions
- Allele: Alternative versions of a gene
- P generation: True-breeding parental generation
- F1 generation: Hybrid offspring from the P generation
- F2 generation: Offspring of the F1 generation
- Dominant allele: Allele expressed over another allele
- Recessive allele: Allele only expressed if no dominant allele is present
- Homozygous: Organism with identical alleles for a trait
- Heterozygous: Organism with different alleles for a trait
- Phenotype: Organism's physical appearance
- Genotype: Organism's genetic makeup (alleles)
- Autosome: Chromosome not involved in determining sex
- X-linked gene: Gene located on the X chromosome
- Crossing over: Exchange of matching segments between homologous chromosomes during meiosis 1
Other Concepts
- Tetrad: Structure formed during meiosis prophase 1, pairing up homologous chromosomes.
- Recombination: Production of offspring with new gene combinations from parents
- Recombinant offspring: Offspring with different phenotypes than parents
- Nondisjunction: Failure of homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids to separate during cell division
- Chiasmata: Point where homologous chromosomes exchange genetic material during crossing over.
- Centrioles: Organelles involved in cell division.
- Complete dominance: One trait is fully expressed over another.
- Incomplete dominance: Neither trait is fully dominant; a blended trait is expressed
- Testcross: Used to determine a parent's genotype (when dominant phenotype is known)
- Homozygous recessive: Organism with two recessive alleles
- Homozygous dominant: Organism with two dominant alleles
- X-linked dominant: Trait expressed in both males and females, skipping generations
- X-linked recessive: Trait predominantly expressed in males, possible for carriers
- Chi-square: Statistical test used to determine if observed data differs significantly from expected data
- Product rule: Used to determine the probability of multiple independent events occurring together
- Mitochondrial DNA/Chloroplast DNA: Passed from mother to offspring
- Mitosis: Cell division for growth and repair in body cells (somatic cells).
- Produces 2 identical diploid daughter cells
- Meiosis: Cell division for gamete (sex cell) production.
- Produces 4 genetically unique haploid daughter cells
