In biology, understanding heredity and evolution is crucial because it explains why living organisms look and function the way they do. These processes involve the transmission of genetic information from parents to their offspring and how species change over time, leading to new forms of life. At the heart of these processes lies the molecule responsible for transmitting biological traits from one generation to another—DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid).
DNA and Its Structure
DNA consists of four chemical units called nucleotides made up of three parts: a sugar base, phosphate group, and nitrogenous base. A human cell contains around two meters of DNA packed into structures within the nucleus known as chromosomes. This entire set of DNA instructions, including both genes and noncoding regions, makes up our complete genetic makeup.
Gene Expression and Inheritance
Each gene holds specific instructions for making proteins which control everything we do, such as growing hair or digesting food. When cells divide, they copy their DNA so each daughter cell has its own copy. If you inherit certain DNA sequences from your mother and different ones from your father, you will have inherited some characteristics from them too, like eye color. However, hereditary patterns can also result from chance events during reproduction called mutations, where errors occur while replicating DNA.
