Hepatitis B Series and Exposure Incidents

  • Hepatitis B series requires three injections, and the Hepatitis B surface antibody titer must be drawn before the first Annual Performance Review.
  • Exposure Incidents must be documented, including:
    • Engineering controls in place at the time of the incident
    • Work practice controls in place at the time of the incident
    • Personal protective equipment and clothing used at the time of the incident
    • Policy and control failures, if any

Reporting and Medical Evaluation

  • Employees must notify their immediate supervisor and the ECO (Medical Director of the Sheriff’s Office Occupational Health and Wellness Center) as soon as possible after an Exposure Incident
  • The exposed employee must complete an Exposure Incident form, which is routed to the Department of Operational Support Medical Director, the Workers’ Compensation Claims Manager, and the Department of Detention Services Medical Advisor
  • Employees must report to the Sheriff’s Office Occupational Health and Wellness Center or an authorized occupational health facility or hospital for medical evaluation within two hours of the incident

Immediate Treatment After Exposure

  • Needle stick, sharps, cuts, and abrasions: wash site with soap and water or waterless hand cleaners
  • Mucous membrane/non-intact skin:
    • Eyes: rinse thoroughly with water or saline
    • Skin: wash with water and antiseptic soap
    • Mouth: rinse with water
  • Other wound care as dictated by accident or injury
