Study Notes

Hematopoietic Tissues

  • Produce blood cells
  • Two types: Red bone marrow and lymphatic tissue
    • Red bone marrow located in ends of long bones and flat, irregular bones
    • Lymphatic tissue located in spleen, lymph nodes, and thymus glands, supports blood cell production by producing lymphocytes

Blood Composition and Function

  • Consists of plasma and formed elements
    • Plasma: Contains proteins, primarily albumin, plays vital roles in blood clotting, immune response, and fluid regulation, serum is plasma without clotting proteins
    • Formed elements: Constitute 45% of blood, include erythrocytes (RBCs), leukocytes (WBCs), and platelets (thrombocytes), WBCs and platelets form a layer beneath plasma called the buffy coat, buffy coat comprises approximately 1% or less of total blood volume, RBCs are the heaviest and sink to the bottom, hematocrit is the percentage of RBCs in a blood sample

Viscosity

  • Refers to thickness or stickiness of a fluid
  • Decrease in RBCs makes blood thinner (less viscous), causing faster blood flow
  • Increase in RBCs increases viscosity, leading to slower blood flow

Blood Cell Formation

  • Hematopoietic processes are responsible for blood cell production

Blood

  • Connective tissue composed of various cells and fluid, also known as fluid matrix
  • Functions:
    • Transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, enzymes, etc. throughout the body
    • Removes waste products from body's cells
    • Protects the body against infection
    • Stabilizes body's acid-base balance
    • Regulates body temperature

Plasma

  • Clear extracellular matrix of liquid connective tissue, accounts for 55% of blood
  • Main component is water
