HEFD Walk-Off Ceremony Station 21 Preparation
- RE21 is removed from the West bay and the bay floor is cleaned and dried.
- E21 is used as a backdrop for the ceremony, with doors closed and gear stowed (washed the night before).
- If a large group is expected, E21 may be moved onto the apron, weather permitting.
- A lectern/podium is placed near the HEFD logo on E21 door for photos, with a table to its left for the Union presentation axe.
- Chairs for guests are placed in the West bay, facing the lectern/podium at an angle (if desired/needed).
- A table is placed outside by the flagpole with the certificate display cabinet (folded flag compartment left open) and the village-owned U.S. flag.
Ceremony
- The ceremony begins in the apparatus bay.
- The emcee/Chief/Staff Officer announces the start of the ceremony.
- Guests are escorted to their seats (if applicable), and the retiree takes a position near the lectern/podium.
- FD personnel fills in behind the guests, facing the retiree.
- The Honor Guard posts the colors and invites the audience to join in the Pledge of Allegiance.
- The speaker conducts their portion (using a template), followed by an open mic for brothers to address the retiree, and then the retiree addresses the crowd.
- The Battalion Chief contacts NWCDS to sound the final alarm and read the script.
- A Union official presents the Local 2061 axe to the retiree.
- Everyone is directed to gather outside for the flag exchange ceremony.
Flag Exchange Ceremony Options
- OPTION 1 (retiree's crew lowering the flag): The retiree's crew takes their position as the flag detail, with the Chief/Staff officer and Union presenter next to the table in a straight line facing the street.
- OPTION 2 (Honor Guard flag detail): The retiree's crew takes their position next to the table in a straight line facing the street, with the HG detail standing with 5 at the flagpole.
Flag Exchange Ceremony Procedure
- The flag detail lowers the flag, folds it, and presents it to the retiree's company officer.
- The company officer reads the certificate aloud and either presents the display box to the retiree directly or to the Chief Officer to present to the retiree.
- The detail leader calls "Personnel, Attention. Dismissed" to release them.
Inclement Weather Version
- The ceremony begins in the apparatus bay.
- Guests are escorted to their seats (if applicable), and the retiree takes a position near the lectern/podium.
- The Honor Guard posts the colors, and the group recites the Pledge of Allegiance.
- The lectern/podium is placed near the HEFD logo on E22 door for photos, with a table to its left for the Union presentation axe.
- Chairs for guests are placed in the North bay, facing the lectern/podium at an angle (if desired/needed).
- The table is placed outside by the flagpole with the certificate display cabinet (folded flag compartment left open) and the village-owned U.S. flag.
Inclement Weather Flag Exchange Ceremony
- The flag exchange ceremony takes place in the parking lot handicap spaces facing the front doors.
- FD personnel line up in rows, with Staff/Chiefs/Officers in Class A uniforms in front, followed by others in Class A uniform.
- Behind them are uniformed personnel (duty uniforms), and those in street clothes are behind the formation (not intermingled).
- The retiree walks down the line, saying final goodbyes/thanks, and joins the company near the flagpole when done.
- The department bagpiper begins to play music and proceeds to march through the station and exit the rear, allowing the music to trail off.
