Study Notes
Heat & Cold Therapy
- Heat therapy (thermotherapy) increases blood vessel dilation (vasodilation), enhances capillary permeability, boosts cellular metabolism, increases inflammation, and has a sedative effect. Possible side effect: boils.
Cold Therapy (Cryotherapy)
- Cold therapy constricts blood vessels (vasoconstriction), reduces capillary permeability, slows cellular metabolism, decreases inflammation, and provides a local anesthetic effect.
Cold Compresses
- Used for various conditions, including: eye allergies, swelling, fever, acne, rashes, insect bites, common pains, tendonitis/bursitis, gout flare-ups, sprains, strains, migraines, headaches, and razor burns.
Warm Compresses
- Used for: respiratory congestion and pain, eye-related problems, closed wounds and abscesses, ingrown toenails, earaches, toothaches, menstrual cramps, post-inflammation, tendinosis pain, arthritis, and muscle or joint spasms.
Equipment
- Electric hot compress
- Cold compress (ice pack)
- Sitz bath (used for hemorrhoids and hemorrhoidectomy)
Precautions for Heat & Cold Therapy
- Patient: Ensure patient is conscious and responsive to commands; continuous monitoring is essential.
- Instrument: Safe use; ensure appropriate temperature settings (hot/cold).
- Tepid sponging: A method of applying lukewarm water to the patient for cooling.
