NYHA Functional Classification of Heart Disease
- Class I: No limitations in physical activity; ordinary activities do not trigger symptoms like fatigue, dyspnea, palpitations, or angina.
- Class II: Slight activity limitation; patients are symptom-free at rest but experience fatigue, dyspnea, palpitations, or angina during ordinary physical activities.
- Class III: Marked limitation in physical activity; patients feel comfortable at rest, but less than ordinary activity leads to symptoms such as fatigue, dyspnea, palpitations, or angina.
- Class IV: Inability to engage in any physical activity without discomfort; symptoms may be present even at rest, and any activity increases discomfort.
ACCF/AHA Stages of Heart Failure
- Stage A: Patients are at high risk for heart failure, typically due to conditions like hypertension, diabetes, or metabolic syndrome, but do not exhibit structural heart disease or symptoms.
- Stage B: Patients show evidence of structural heart disease without prior signs or symptoms of heart failure; includes those with a history of myocardial infarction or valve disease.
- Stage C: Patients exhibit prior or current symptoms of heart failure, linked to known structural heart disease.
- Stage D: Patients have refractory heart failure, presenting with severe symptoms even at rest despite optimal medical treatment, necessitating specialized intervention.
