- The physical fitness of Firefighters is critical for health, safety, and job performance in public safety roles.
- A Health, Wellness, and Safety Committee, comprising three representatives from both the Employer and Union, has been established to address these concerns.
- The Committee includes a Chairperson appointed by the Fire Chief and an advisory role for the City Physician when needed.
- Meetings are scheduled at least quarterly, with findings reported to the Labor/Management Committee.
Physical Fitness Testing Program
- Mandatory for all Employees hired post-July 1, 1999; voluntary for those hired before this date.
- Aimed at ensuring that employees remain informed about physical fitness expectations without affecting their prior employment conditions.
- Successful completion of the Physical Ability Test (PAT) grants participants a traditional incentive of 24 hours off or 24 hours of pay.
- Each employee is allowed one testing opportunity per fiscal year for the incentive.
Testing and Support Procedures
- Employees failing to meet the PAT maintenance level will collaborate with the Fitness Coordinator or Specialist to develop a new exercise plan.
- A retest is permitted after three months of following the revised exercise plan.
