Study Notes
What is Health Ethics?
- Derived from the Greek "ethos", ethics concerns questions about right versus wrong conduct and what constitutes a good or bad life.
- Health ethics is an interdisciplinary field that seeks to understand the values underlying decisions and actions in healthcare, research, and policy, and provides guidance for action when values conflict.
- Distinguishable from medical ethics, which focuses on clinical contexts, and bioethics, which refers to ethical issues in the creation and maintenance of health in all living things.
Scope of Health Ethics
- Encompasses ethical issues faced by health professionals, policymakers, researchers, patients, families, and communities in various contexts, including clinical care, health services, public health, epidemiology, and information technology.
- Increasingly part of health professional and bioscience training curricula, as well as programmes in health administration, economics, law, biotechnology, and environmental health.
Values in Health
- Values are what is important to individuals, groups, or societies, and include autonomy, fairness, equity, compassion, honesty, freedom, solidarity, trust, and respect.
- Conflicts may arise between different values, such as achieving equity versus individual autonomy, or between universal, group, or individual values.
- Respecting differences in values between societies and cultures is important.
Health Ethics and Law
- Ethics and law are normative frameworks that define how people ought to act, and are often complementary but not identical.
- Legal actions may conflict with ethical standards, and ethical analysis of laws can stimulate reform efforts or acts of civil disobedience.
- Laws may provide general standards that require interpretation, and ethics may be concerned with a broader set of relationships and behaviors than legal regulation.
